We have decided on a used 1998 Ford Explorer as our first family car. We were going to go with a regular sedan but with all of the stuff we lug around for the baby, an SUV made more sense.
We don't want to add any more payments to our budget so we are going with a used car and are paying cash. The cash came from the income tax refund we got this year. The baby was born last year so all of those child tax credits and earned income credits came in handy.
This is step two in our road to independence. The first step of course was getting our own place.
Step three would be a fully funded emergency fund, Step 4...The House.
The Ford Explorer offered us the best ratio of size to price. All other SUV's were either too small or just out of our price range. After reading countless reviews and consumer reports we decided on the Explorer. 1998 was just a good year for this vehicle, the '99's and 2000's had a lot of problems with the transmissions and electrical systems.
I also get car insurance at a discount from MetLife through my employer, so thats a pretty good deal.
No more asking for rides or asking to borrow anyones car. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
