Washington Mutual is offering up 5% on their regular savings account when you sign up for their free checking on-line. They don't advertise this on television, radio or even at their local branches. Not sure why they do this, maybe they don't want everyone signing up at once. There is only a $1 minumum to get the 5% and as always only 6 withdrawals/month (including automatic bill paying withdrawals) because it is a regular savings account. All those who get "shook" by the thought of using on-line banks to get higher than normal rates can now join the rest of us in the >1% interest world.

So totally free checking and a savings account with a nice interest rate, could this be the start of a new trend for all brick-and-mortar banks. I hope so.
